How to Wash and Care for Your Recycled emaré

emaré products are not only versatile, but they are also easy to care for. Made from recycled sails and/or deadstock fabric, they've already been tried and tested at sea and require little attention during everyday use. So don't be afraid to wash recycled sail/fabric products; just follow these simple tricks, and you'll see that sailcloth bag care is a breeze.

Washing Your Sailcloth Bag

All the sail products are safe to hand wash as they do not shrink or deform like canvas bags. Still, use this method sparingly, especially if your bag has vintage insignia, black or navy handles, or high-performance sailcloth.

Wash our recycled products with cold water using clear detergent, then hang them by the handles or lie flat to air dry. That's it! Do not use bleach or the dryer, as they can damage sail.

Caring for Your emaré

While you can machine wash recycled sail products (bags, mats, hats), it's often not necessary. A simple spot clean will do the trick in most cases; just be sure to try the stain remover on a hidden area first to see if it reacts with the sailcloth. Also, if you clean your emaré outdoors, use a natural cleaning product to protect the environment.

Care of emaré with spot cleaning:

• Spray a gentle stain remover such as napisan (never use chlorine or bleach based products as this will yellow the sail fabric)
• Let it soak
• Wipe it with a clean cloth

Voilà, your emaré is as good as new; no need to use aggressive stain removers or brushes.

Are Sail Bags and Totes Water Resistant?

All our sail bags are water resistant! They are made from 100% recycled sailcloth, so they can take a lot of water (That's why it's also safe to wash recycled sail products). However, there are always parts that are a bit more delicate such as the seams, cotton webbing handles, and zippers.

emaré uses marine-grade materials and corrosion-resistant zippers that can withstand rain and water but to make your bag long-lasting, try to avoid extreme scenarios. So if you drop your bag in the puddle once or twice, it will be fine. If you take it snorkeling (why would you, though?), it won't love that.

How to Keep the White Cloths Bags in Good Shape

Recycled sailcloth sometimes have stains from their previous life spent at sea. These are more visible on white cloth and can't be removed, but we think that only makes them more unique!

As for new stains, gentle sailcloth care is the best approach for white bags. Avoid chlorine bleach as it can turn the fabric yellow; just wipe them down with a wet cloth and enjoy them as they are: full of personality, patina, and a story to tell.
